Why RingCentral shows you as Away (and how to stay Available)

You're at your desk, reading a long document or on a call on another device, and a coworker tells you RingCentral shows you as offline. RingCentral doesn't have a status called "Away." What people see is an empty circle, which RingCentral labels Offline/Invisible. Here is what RingCentral's help center says about it, what it leaves out, and your options.

The presence indicators in the RingCentral app

RingCentral calls the dot on your profile picture your presence indicator. It tells coworkers whether you're available, busy, or offline, and it sits at the bottom right of your profile picture [1]. The help center lists four indicators [1]:

There is no separate "Busy" option in that list. The page mentions "busy" in its introduction, but the indicator that plays that role is the automatic red "in a meeting/on a call" circle [1].

Why you turn gray: the 15-minute rule

The key sentence is this one: the empty circle appears when you're "inactive for at least 15 minutes" [1]. Note the wording "at least." RingCentral doesn't promise it happens at exactly 15 minutes.

Because the same empty circle means offline, signed out, inactive, and manually Invisible, coworkers can't tell those apart [1]. To them, stepping away for 15 minutes looks the same as having quit the app.

RingCentral's support site also lists an article titled "Presence Status on the RingCentral App Switching to Invisible Automatically" [2]. When we checked it in September 2026, every version we tried returned "Sorry, that page can't be found," so we can't tell you what it said.

Desktop, web, and mobile

RingCentral publishes one presence page for desktop and web together [1] and a separate one for mobile [3]. Both describe the same four indicators and the same "at least 15 minutes" of inactivity [1][3]. Neither page explains any difference between the desktop app and a browser tab, or how activity on your phone combines with activity on your computer.

Calls and meetings

When you join a meeting or call, RingCentral switches you to the red "in a meeting/on a call" indicator automatically [1]. One catch: "If you set your presence indicator to Invisible, it won't change when you join a meeting or call" [1].

RingCentral also has a phone-side Presence feature for RingEX customers. It lets colleagues see extension statuses such as "available, busy, or on hold," including on Presence-capable desk phones, where a colleague's light blinks when their line rings or a call is on hold and stays lit while the line is in use [4]. And if your account is phone-only, your presence "will reflect call availability" [5].

How to set your presence manually

RingCentral's pages don't say whether choosing Available by hand keeps you green through 15 minutes of inactivity.

You can also use Share status in the profile menu to post a status message, such as a custom note, for others to see [6][7].

Can your admin change the 15-minute timeout?

We found no RingCentral support page describing a setting that changes or turns off the inactivity timeout. The Admin Portal presence settings RingCentral documents cover who can see your presence and how monitored lines ring and get picked up, not idle time [8]. RingCentral does say admins "can set and adjust the status for other users" under its phone Presence feature [9], and that support can enable an option so a user's presence follows call availability instead of app use [5]. Neither is described as a timeout setting.

User requests on RingCentral's ideas portal back this up. One asking for a "configurable change time of presence status to inactivity" had 108 votes and was marked Under Review [10]. Another, asking that idle users not be shown as offline, had 156 votes and was also Under Review [11]. These are user reports and feature requests, not RingCentral statements.

Does a mouse jiggler keep RingCentral green?

RingCentral doesn't say. Its help center says you go offline after being "inactive for at least 15 minutes" [1][3], but it doesn't define inactive. It doesn't say whether it watches input inside the RingCentral window, input anywhere on your computer, or your computer's system idle time. So we can't point you to an official answer on whether synthetic mouse or keyboard input counts.

If you try a tool, test it: leave your computer alone for 20 minutes and check your dot from your phone or ask a coworker.

GreenLight is a free menu-bar app for Mac, with a Windows beta. After about a minute of idle time it moves the pointer briefly and taps Shift, which resets your computer's system idle timer. That system idle reset is what GreenLight relies on to keep RingCentral showing Available. It has Off, On, and Scheduled modes, needs no account, and makes no internet connection. It can't keep you active while your computer is asleep, locked, or the lid is closed, and it doesn't hide itself, so some employer monitoring tools can detect it.

Check your workplace rules

Whether it's fine to use an activity tool depends on your employer. Some workplaces have policies about presence-status tools, so check yours before installing anything.
